Edith M. Kaufmann, 92, of Fort Wayne, Indiana died August 2, 2021, at her home in the care of her family.
She was born October 14, 1928, in Remington, Indiana to Erwin and Anna (Eisenman) Bahler.
On February 1, 1948, she married Ben L. Kaufmann. He preceded her in death on December 3, 2012.
Edith was a homemaker and small business owner who knew the value of hard work. She was an active member of The Chapel in Fort Wayne and taught numerous Bible studies, child evangelism, and discipleship classes over the years.
Edith enjoyed gardening, knitting, birdwatching and walking. She enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and took large groups of them on week-long trips to the Gull Lake Bible Conference. She was a seamstress and an expert at repairing clothing to extend its useful life. Edith was always concerned for the spiritual and emotional health of those in her circle. She served on year-long mission trip to Spain and another to Japan to support her nephew's church-building ministry. When she was in her late 70's, she helped with the relief effort after Hurricane Katrina. In her 80's she volunteered at Charis House, a ministry to homeless women struggling with addiction, and their children.
She is survived by eight of her children: Joan McMillan of Fort Wayne, Anne (Cleve) Graham of Fort Wayne, Kerry (Kathy) Kaufmann of Fort Wayne, Craig (Cheri) Kaufmann of Fort Wayne, Jonathon (Deborah) Kaufman of Fort Wayne, David Kaufman of Fort Wayne, Judy (Eric) Fisher of Fort Wayne, and Gene (Jenny) Kaufmann of Minden, Nevada. Also surviving are forty grandchildren; and sixty-four great-grandchildren; countless surrogate grandchildren, three sisters, Betty Zimmerman of Marietta, Georgia, Mable Bahler of Lafayette, Indiana and Viola (Richard) Stoller of Remington; and two brothers, Walter (Esther) Bahler of Remington and Ray Bahler of Denton, Texas.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Burt Kaufmann, who died in infancy; sister, Evelyn Knochel; and two brothers, Edwin Bahler and David Bahler.
Visitation is Friday, August 13, 2021, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Chapel, 2505 W. Hamilton Road S, Fort Wayne.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 14, 2021, at 1 p.m. also at The Chapel, 2505 W. Hamilton Road S, Fort Wayne. There will also be visitation at The Chapel and one hour prior to the service.
Preferred memorials are to The Chapel.
