Obituary

Dwight G. Grate, 78, of Avilla died Thursday, August 24, 2017, at 12:30 a.m. in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

He was born June 21, 1939, in Auburn to George and Edith (Thomson) Grate.

On February 14, 1959, in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Avilla, he married Beverly J. Lobdell. She survives in Avilla.

He was a self-employed contractor having previously worked for Strawser Brothers Construction in Kendallville.

Also surviving are two sons, Brent Lynn Grate of Avilla and Jay L. (Sherry) Grate of Westfield; five grandchildren, J. Ryan Crawford of Elkhart, Mandy (Justin) McAfee of Fort Wayne, Paige Grate of Westfield, Lauren Grate of Indianapolis, and Chase Grate of Avilla; four sisters, Connie (Don) Teders of Avilla, Carolyn Anthony of Urbana, Ohio, Colleen (Lynn) Hart of Wolcottville, and Bonnie (Ken) Gehring of Kendallville; a brother, Glen (Carolyn) Grate of Fort Wayne; and a sister-in-law, Sadie Grate of Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Herb Grate; and a brother-in-law, Lynn Anthony.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at 11 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Patrick Kuhlman of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Avilla officiating. Burial will be in Avilla Lutheran Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brent Lynn Grate, Jay L. Grate, Gene Rowe, Kyle Rowe, Ryan Crawford, and Chase Grate.

Calling is Monday, August 28, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.
