Douglas Lee Gaerte, 61, of Albion died Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at 1:33 p.m. in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne as the result of a motorcycle accident on June 21st in Wolf Lake.
He was a lifetime area resident and a 1974 graduate of Central Noble High School. He attended the Sugar Grove Church of God in Churubusco.
Mr. Gaerte was an owner and operator of Gaerte Grain in Kimmell from 1983 to 2015. He was also a trucker and a hobby farmer.
Doug enjoyed his family, farming, trucking, motorcycles, antique cars, and John Deere tractors.
He was born March 26, 1955, in Kendallville to Richard D. and Kay Ann (Young) Gaerte. His father preceded him in death in 1982. His mother, Kay Ann Gaerte Riddle survives in Albion.
On May 31, 1980, in Merriam he married Ann Marie Baker. She survives in Albion.
Also surviving are two daughters, LeAnn (Gavin) Parker of Churubusco and Angela (Brent) McCoy of Albion; six grandchildren, Laney Parker, Baylee McCoy, Gauge Parker, Rylee McCoy, Kylee McCoy, and Jagger McCoy; a sister, Kathy (Dan) Fortman of Avilla; and two brothers, David (Laura) Gaerte of Albion and Donald (Vickie) Gaerte of Albion.
Funeral services will be Sunday, June 26, 2016, at 2 p.m. in the Sugar Grove Church of God, 5091 E 500 S-57, Churubusco with Pastor Tim Grable officiating. Burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
Casketbearers will be Jeremy Gaerte, Ryan Gaerte, Tom Fortman, Tim Miller, Justin Miller, and Steve Shively.
Calling is Saturday, June 25, 2016, from 2 to 8 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville and one hour prior to services on Sunday at the church.
Preferred memorials are to Riley Hospital for Children or to the donor's choice.
