Obituary

Donald D. Shipe, 78, of Ashley died Saturday, February 24, 2018, at 1:20 a.m. at Auburn Villages in Auburn.

He was born August 9, 1939, in Waterloo to Cecil and Lois (Johnson) Shipe and was a lifelong Ashley resident.

On March 7, 1964, in Union City, Michigan, he married Martha E. Peck.

He retired from Auburn Gear and was also an integral part of Deano's Diner in Ashley, which is owned and operated by his son.

Mr. Shipe was a member of the Cedar Lake Church of Christ and a 50-year member of the Ashley Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite, and the Ashley OES. He served as past Master and Secretary of the Ashley Masonic Lodge for 40 years.

He was the financial secretary of UAW 825 in Auburn for 33 years and a former fire fighter for Ashley. He also held several positions within community government for the town of Ashley.

Don was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed fishing. But, for him, family was always first and he dearly loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Martha E. Shipe of Ashley; a son, Dean (Shelley) Shipe of Ashley; a daughter, Diane (Scott) Hines of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren, Nick Shipe, Laurie Shipe, Brandon Thews, Bradee Thews, Chloë Hines, and Chase Hines; and six great-grandchildren, Ayden Jones, Raylin Akey, Hartley Akey, Brooklyn Hines, Brayden Hines, and Bentley Hines.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Ann Pearson; a granddaughter, Chelsea Hines; and a great-grandson, Boston Hines.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Hudson-Ashley Chapel, 612 North Main Street, Hudson with Pastor Jonathan Pennington of the Cedar Lake Church of Christ officiating. Private burial will be at Circle Cemetery.

Visitation is Tuesday, February 27, 2018, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. A Masonic Lodge service will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Preferred memorials are to the Ashley Masonic Lodge.
