Donald F. Lauer, 83, of Kendallville died unexpectedly Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 8:52 a.m. in Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville.
He was born September 15, 1934, in Fort Wayne to Frank and Marie (Masbaum) Lauer.
On October 15, 1977, in Fort Wayne he married Barbara (Evans) Freeman.
He honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. Lauer retired as a Captain with the Fort Wayne Police Department.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 7839, Kendallville VFW Post 2749, Kendallville American Legion Post 86, Kendallville Lions Club, and the FOP in Fort Wayne.
Don enjoyed watching sports, fishing, playing golf, and spending the winter in Florida.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Lauer of Kendallville; two daughters, Michele Higgins of Lafayette and Debra (Langdon) Adams of Fort Wayne; a son, Donald J. (Julie) Lauer of Auburn; nine grandchildren, Melissa (Michael) Ellis, Megan Stockton, Gregory Higgins, Amanda Higgins, Jennifer (Jason) Sloniker, Joshua Brunger, Stephanie Brunger, Anna (Austin) Haselhorst, and Elizabeth Lauer; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary (Bob) Bartlett of Lake of the Woods; a brother, Tom (Teresa) Lauer of Fort Wayne; and a sister-in-law, Delphia Lauer of Fort Wayne.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Della (Wood) Lauer; a brother, Richard Lauer; and a granddaughter, Grace Lauer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 301 East Diamond Street, Kendallville with Father James Stoyle officiating. Burial will be at Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne at 2:30 p.m.
Honor guard services will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard.
Calling is Wednesday, January 17, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Preferred memorials are to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kendallville.
