Dennis R. Mapes, 68, of Kendallville died Monday, May 13, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at the home of his sister in Kendallville.
He was born July 14, 1950, in Kendallville to Lawrence and Martha (McCreary) Mapes.
He honorably served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1976 to 1979.
On March 14, 1981, in Kendallville he married Hazel J. Ledford.
Mr. Mapes retired from Dalton Foundry in Kendallville.
Dennis enjoyed all outdoor activities, including mowing grass, shoveling snow, gardening, and hunting for mushrooms. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He loved his children, grandchildren, brothers, and sisters with all his heart and was blessed to see them frequently.
Surviving are his wife Hazel Mapes of Kendallville; eight children, Dennis Mapes of Kendallville, Andrea Mapes of Kendallville, Kristina Mapes of Kendallville, Daniel Mapes of Kendallville Rebecca Handshoe of Kendallville, Douglas (Jillian) Mapes of Kendallville, Melinda Mapes of Kendallville, and Dustin Mapes of Fishers; seven grandchildren, Kayden, Kealen, and Kody Fuller; Brian and Damien Handshoe, Kevin Combs, and Lilliana Mapes; six sisters, Phyllis Mapes of Kendallville, Nancy Knox of Kendallville, Karen (Richard) Bell of Churubusco, Sally Mapes of Story Lake, Susan (Dan) Weirich of Huntertown, and Doris Christlieb of Kendallville; four brothers, Kenneth (Alleen) Mapes of Rome City, Robert (Marcy) Mapes of Red Oak, Texas, Lawrence Mapes of Kendallville, and Gale (Marsha) Mapes of LaGrange; sister-in-law, Rita (Frank) Walkup of Kendallville; and brother-in-law, Jerry (Ronda) Ledford of Kendallville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Knox; and a granddaughter, Haleigh Combs.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 17, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Rev. Dr. Scott Pattison officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.
Honor guard services will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard and members of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Pallbearers are Dennis Mapes, Jr., Daniel Mapes, Douglas Mapes, Dustin Mapes, Kayden Fuller, and Kealen Fuller.
Calling is Thursday, May 16, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Preferred memorials are to the family.
