Cleo Jean Hanes, 80, of Kendallville died Sunday, February 26, 2012, at 1:40 a.m. in her residence. She graduated from Kendallville High School in 1950.
Mrs. Hanes was a Title One Tutor for the Tippecanoe School Corporation for a number of years.
She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 86, Kendallville. She supported the Noble County Humane Society and many veterans' causes.
Cleo had a wonderful appeal to help others throughout her life. She was a great mother, wife, friend, and neighbor. She supported her husband during college and as an athlete, during his military service, and throughout his teaching career. She car-pooled her sons and enjoyed all their school activities. She loved her dogs, Skippy, Casey, and Shadow. She was warm and gentle on the outside, but strong on the inside.
She was born December 3, 1931, in Kendallville to Chester "Chet" and Zelma (Budd) Dukes. On February 2, 1951, in Kendallville she married Harold B. Hanes, Jr. He preceded her in death on August 2, 2002.
Surviving are a son, Daniel Hanes of Mishawaka; a sister, Shirley Smith of Kendallville; and two half brothers, Douglas Dukes of Milford and Dennis Dukes of Georgia.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Hanes on August 22, 1990, and a brother, Donald Dukes.
Private funeral services will be held with Rev. G. Scott Pattison of Trinity Church United Methodist Church in Kendallville officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville.
Preferred memorials are to the Parkview Noble Home Health and Hospice, 1836 Ida Red Road, Kendallville, Indiana, 46755.
Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville is assisting the family with arrangements.
