Carl G. Knafel, 90, of Rome City died Sunday, September 6, 2009, at 12:05 a.m. in Parkview LaGrange Hospital, LaGrange.
Mr. Knafel was self-employed carpenter and stone mason. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 276, Kendallville.
He was born November 26, 1918, in Wolf Lake to Arthur and Elsie (Emmen) Knafel. On January 1, 1940, in Kendallville, he married Bonnie Wray. She preceded him in death on February 19, 1972. On July 10, 1973, in Hayward, Wisconsin, he married Carol (Ross) Wirick.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Knafel of Rome City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and John Holsinger of Wolcottville and Connie and Clairdon Strater of Garrett; a son, Terry Knafel of Indianapolis; a stepson, Jack Wirick of Syracuse; 14 grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; a sister, Helen Applegate of Albion; and one brother, Ed Knafel of Wabash.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bette Meier and Viola Young, and two brothers, Kenny Knafel and Harlan "Bud" Knafel, and a stepdaughter, Evelyn Fortman.
Funeral services and Masonic Lodge services will be Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville, with Rev. Carldean Merrifield officiating. Burial will be in Orange Cemetery, Rome City.
Calling will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Preferred memorials are to the family.
