Brian Henry Joest passed away on January 11, 2022, at the age of 64 at the Visiting Nurse Hospice Home in Fort Wayne, Indiana after a months-long battle with cancer.
Brian was born to Alvin Henry and Josephine Annette (Atwood) Joest on April 28, 1957, in LaGrange, Indiana. After graduating with the Lakeland High School Class of 1975, he earned an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Glen Oaks Community College, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University.
Brian began his professional career with management positions at Many Glacier Hotel at Glacier National Park, the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, the Mountain View Grand Resort in New Hampshire, and Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado. He also worked for Marriott Corporation where he opened new hotels across the Midwest. Later, after moving back home to LaGrange County, he worked for the Kendallville News-Sun newspaper, Life Care Center of LaGrange, and was a substitute teacher for the Lakeland School District. For the last 15 years, he worked for East Noble School Corporation, most recently as an Instructional Assistant for high school students with special needs. Brian was also an assistant coach for the East Noble Boys Golf team for several years.
Brian loved to golf and he played on the Tin Cup league at Noble Hawk Golf Links. He spent the last five years working with his siblings to lovingly restore their historic family farmhouse on Atwood Lake in LaGrange County. He was a life member of the Open Door Community Church in Wolcottville, Indiana. In his free time, Brian enjoyed boating and fishing, watching live theater, going to museums, planning and taking trips, and cheering on his beloved Purdue Boilermakers.
He had a love of adventure and traveled extensively. His escapades and near-misses were numerous, and his stories could fill a book. For decades, Brian went on annual backcountry camping and canoeing trips across the US and Canada. Together with his friends and son, he paddled some of the most beautiful rivers in North America. He took a road trip to remote northern Alaska. He camped out on an active volcano in Guatemala. He explored most of the US National Parks. In his later years, his travels were less rustic but still adventurous as he and his wife, Cindy, checked off many items on his bucket list. They traveled to Paris, Rome, Florence, the Amalfi Coast of Italy, Ireland, and all around the US and Canada. Brian provided countless memories for his children, family, and friends that will be cherished forever.
Brian is survived by his wife, Cindy, of Kendallville, IN; sons Brandon Joest (Delaney Elliott) of Sylvania, OH and Jackson Joest of Carmel, IN; step-son Nick (Rebecca) Adams and step-grandchildren Jonas Adams and Julia Adams, all of Kalamazoo, MI; step-daughter Natalie Adams of Kendallville, IN; brother David (Nancy) Joest of Fort Wayne, IN; sister Barbara (Bob) Helmkamp of Sedona, AZ; dear friend Dr. Dennis Bobilya of Fort Wayne, IN; and former wife and mother of his children Patricia Joest of Carmel, IN.
