Billy L. Smith, 89, of Columbia City died Friday, June 8, 2018 at 7:10 p.m. in his residence.
He was born March 8, 1929, in Kendallville to Claude T. and Nellie M. (Waldron) Smith.
Mr. Smith honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. In May, 2017 he was honored to be part of the Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana to Washington D.C.
On October 18, 1953, in Kendallville he married Barbara A. Hinkley.
He has lived in Columbia City since 1974, coming from Auburn and prior from Kendallville. He was a 1947 graduate of Kendallville High School.
Bill and his wife formerly owned and operated the Dairy Queen in Columbia City, where he was fondly known as "Dilly Bar". After retirement he worked at the Crooked Lake Golf Course at Columbia City for 30 years where everyone knew him as "Smitty".
He was a member of the Kendallville Elks Lodge, Kendallville VFW Post 2749, and Columbia City American Legion Post 98.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Barbara A. Smith of Columbia City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Babetta "Babs" and Randy Brown of Columbia City and Belinda and Ben Bunyan of Columbia City; two sons, Bradley and Tonja Smith of New Bremen, Ohio, and Ben and Erin Smith of Muncie; nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Arcille Skelley and Katherine Hasselman; and five brothers, Lauren Smith, Harold Smith, Jim Smith, Charles "Bud" Smith, and Bob Smith.
A memorial gathering will be on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, from 5 to 8 pm at the Columbia City Elks Lodge, 109 S Main St, Columbia City. The family requests that you come in casual attire.
