Alva J. "Junior" Williams, 87, of Wolcottville died Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at 6:28 p.m. in Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville.
He honorably served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He received two purple hearts in May, 1945, while serving in the Phillipines.
Mr. Williams moved to this area in 1968, coming from Muncie. While in Muncie, he worked for Irving Concrete Company. After moving to Wolcottville, he was a self-employed building contractor.
He was a member of the Rome City American Legion Post 381.
Junior was a loving and giving man. He honorably served his country and his family. He was an avid NASCAR fan, loved to cook, and had a wonderful sweet tooth. He made the best peanut butter fudge around.
He was born February 6, 1925, in Muncie to Alva and Irene S. (Miller) Williams. On November 1, 1946, in Muncie he married Jo Ann Swain. She preceded him in death on January 24, 1988.
Surviving are four grandchildren, Cindy and Floyd Szuba of North Liberty; Christy and Johnny Saylor of Wolcottville, James Ludlow of Lewiston, Maine, and Sarah Williams of White Pigeon, Michigan; seven great grandchildren, Corey Saylor, Brandy Saylor, Carly Saylor, Zack Szuba, Conner Szuba, Nik Szuba, and Dana Ludlow; and a sister-in-law, Karen and Bud Joyce of Wolcottville.
He was also preceded in death by a son, John Williams; two daughters, Carol Ludlow and Joyce Ann Williams; six brothers; and one sister.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 23, 2012, at 1 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville, with Pastor Joey Nelson of Stone's Hill Community Church in Ligonier officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Wolcottville.
Honor guard services will be provided by Rome City American Legion Post 381, Kendallville VFW Post 2749, and active duty members of the U.S. Army.
Calling is Saturday, June 23, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the family.
