Alice Jean Aungst, 85, of Avilla died Monday, December 28, 2015, at 5:15 a.m. in Presence Sacred Heart Home, Avilla.
She had resided in Avilla since February, coming from Kendallville.
She started working at Sears & Roebuck in Kendallville and Thrapp & Thrapp in Kendallville. She retired from People's Federal in Kendallville after 20 years. After retirement, she worked as a secretary at the Northeastern Center in Kendallville.
Mrs. Aungst was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville where she was a member of the Good News and Friendship Bible Study Groups. She was a past board member of Noble County Foundations (now ARC). She was also a member of the Fun & Fancy Homemakers Club and the Worthwhile Club. Jean volunteered at the Windmill Museum, Northeastern Center, and she and her husband volunteered for Meals on Wheels all in Kendallville.
Jean dearly loved her grandchildren. She also enjoyed raising a garden, tending to her flowers, and cooking and baking, especially for her family. But, most of all, Jean loved family reunions and gathering together with her extended family.
She was born June 8, 1930, in LaGrange County to Frederick W. and Edna Christina (Thomas) Beiswanger.
On July 12, 1958, in Kendallville she married Burnell Dean Aungst. He prececed her in death on December 4, 2004.
Surviving are two daughters, Gloria (Mike "Radar") Smith of Berne and Betty Aungst of Kendallville; a son, Tony (Carri) Aungst of Kendallville; and six grandchildren, Matthew Smith of Berne, Andrew Smith of Berne, Mark Smith of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Alyssa Aungst of Bloomington, Emily Aungst of Bloomington, and Olivia Aungst of Kendallville.
The last of nine children, Jean was preceded in death by five brothers, Arlo Beiswanger, Arden Beiswanger, Paul Beiswanger, Leroy Beiswanger, and Eldon Beiswanger; and three sisters, Irene Gage, Lucille VanWagner, and an infant.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 2, 2016, at 11 a.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Tom Novy officiating. Burial will be in Sweet Cemetery.
Calling is Friday, January 1, 2016, from 2 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Saturday.
Preferred memorials are to ARC of Noble County or Trinity Church United Methodist.
