Absalom Wilson, 99, of Rome City died Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 1:55 a.m. in Lakeland Nursing Center in Angola.
Mr. Wilson was a 1929 graduate of Chippewa High School in Wabash County and received his Bachelor's degree in 1933 from Indiana Central College.
He served as a civilan employee at Bunker Hill Naval Air Base in Peru, IN during World War II. He was also a school teacher at Chippewa High School and Linlawn High School in Wabash County and Peru High School, Brook High School, Larwill High School and Rome City High School, retiring from teaching in 1973. He coached basketball, track, football, baseball, and cross country.
He was a member of Rome City Lions Club, Masonic Lodge #451 in Rome City, Masonic Lodge #276 in Kendallville and the Rome City United Methodist Church.
His hobbies include fishing, hunting, golfing, and needlepoint.
He was born April 8, 1911, in Wabash, IN to Absalom & Elizabeth (Working) Wilson. He married Elizabeth L. "Betty" Felton; they were married 68 years before she preceded him in death in 2002.
Surviving are three sons, Edwin L. & Nancy Wilson of Fremont, David R. & Camille Wilson of Kendallville and Rev. Stanley R. & Mary Wilson of Rome City; one daughter, Marilyn E. "Lynn" & James Simons of Hamilton, fifteen Grandchildren; 29 Great Grandchildren; and one Great Great Grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Absalom & Elizabeth Wilson; his wife, Elizabeth L. "Betty" Wilson; a Daughter, Lois Diane Harvey on December 16, 1978; one sister; and eight brothers.
Funeral Services will be Friday, September 24, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in Rome City United Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley R. Wilson and Pastor Barbara Cross officiating.
Burial will be in Orange Cemetery near Rome City.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday, September 24, 2010 at the church.
Memorials are to Rome City United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Services are by Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 S. State St. Kendallville, IN.
