Alvin Henry Joest, 85, of Wolcottville died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 1:50 p.m. at his residence with his family at his side.

Mr. Joest graduated from the Univesity of Evansville with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. from 1945 to 1947 during World War II and from 1950 to 1951 during the Korean War. He retired after 35 years in retail sales with Sears Roebuck & Co. in Kendallville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wolcottville, the Wolcottville Lions Club, and the American Legion. He enjoyed reading, fishing, travel, and photography.

He was born April 26, 1923, in Evansville, Indiana, to Clarence Henry and Clothilde Mae (Mertes) Joest. On August 20, 1950, in Wolcottville he married Josephine Atwood.

Surviving are his wife, Josephine Joest of Wolcottville; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bob Helmkamp of Sedona, Arizona; two sons and daughters-in-law, David A. and Nancy Joest of Fort Wayne and Brian and Patti Joest of Wolcottville; three grandsons, Rob Helmkamp, Brandon Joest, and Jackson Joest; two step grandchildren, Katie Marschand and Andy Marschand; and two step great grandsons, Aidan Marschand and Alix Marschand.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Wolcottville with Pastor Keith Perry and Pastor Keith Davis officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery, Wolcottville. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Rome City American Legion Post 381 and Kendallville VFW Post 2749. Memorials are to Parkview Hospice, Wolcottville Lions Club, or the First Baptist Church, Wolcottville.

Casketbearers will be Bill Vanderpool, Phil Gallup, Steve Mossberg, James Gallup, Duane Targgart, and Mel Steed.

Calling will be Wednesday, July 23, 2008, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, State Road 9 North, Wolcottville is in charge of arrangements.
